Today’s internet is at an interesting crossroads. The web as we know it, the idea of an „anarchic“ web of independent platforms, has come under strong scrutiny. Over the past decade the emergence of „social“ content hosts like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Medium, or even WordPress.com has empowered anyone to quite easily build an audience. More and more those platforms become not only the place where users connect, share links and debate someone else’s content, but also the place where they produce it and where therefor users come to expect to consume them.

Die Seiten der englischen Times sind nun hinter der neuen Paywall versteckt. Das heißt, noch nicht ganz. Wer sich jetzt registriert, darf den Inhalt des Londoner Qualitätspapiers noch ein bisserl gratis „testen“. Hinterher werden Suchmaschinen und nicht-zahlende LeserInnen (1 Pfund pro Tag oder 2 pro Woche) ausgesperrt. Rupert Murdoch und seine StrategInnen werden einige Ideen brauchen, damit man den Content der Times dann noch irgendwie findet. Ich denke, so funktioniert das Geldverdienen online nicht, weil Online so nicht funktioniert (aber immerhin gut, dass das jemand beweisen wird.)
